Club Champion Program Launched

Club Champion Program Launched
As a part of the focus on supporting clubs and the critical work of volunteers, AFL Victoria and AFL North East Border, in partnership with the Victorian State Government, is launching the Club Champion Program ahead of the anticipated return to play in 2021.

The Club Champion Program will deliver additional face to face club support to enhance club management and volunteer support in the Region. The program aims to:
  • Provide targeted support to the most vulnerable clubs across the Region as prioritised and directed by the AFLNEB’s regional staffing network.
  • Develop initiatives to assist in enhancing the operating capability of a club, including strategic planning, financial management and sponsorship acquisition.
  • Assist in dealing with a range of legislative and social issues such as child safe standards, mental health, gender identity, substance abuse and social media use.
Clubs may nominate for the specialised assistance and support provided by the Regions Club Champion network whilst other clubs will be offered the opportunity to participate in the program. Those clubs who wish to express an interest are encouraged to email john.odonohue@afl.com.au by November 30th, 2020 outlining the specific areas of their clubs operations and volunteer workforce which would benefit from the program.

The Club Champions will be people who may have extensive volunteer experience in local clubs, particularly in key club leadership positions as well as other professional skills sets across areas such as business management, finance and marketing are also desirable.

AFLNEB have commenced the process of recruiting and will engage Club Champions as Consultants to deliver on the programs intended outcomes. Clubs are encouraged to identify individuals within their networks whose experiences and skills may be of benefit to club volunteers across the Region.

Individuals interested in roles as a Club Champions should contact Region General Manager John O’Donohue on 0428 507 332 to discuss the opportunity further.

This is an exciting opportunity for clubs as they reboot from the cancelation of 2020.

Ben has been involved with the local Wangaratta Auskick centre for five years and the coordinator for four of those, the exciting announcement was announced at the allocation night for Auskickers graduating to the Wangaratta and District Junior Football League in front of local Auskickers, parents and local WDJFL Clubs. The prize for the award is a grand final weekend experience including three nights' accommodation in Melbourne, a ticket to the Welcome to Melbourne function, attendance at the grand final parade, and a reserve seat ticket to the 27 September grand final. Over his time, Ben has secured significant sponsorship for the program; has initiated the all-girls' group; provides a support network for smaller centres across Wangaratta and surrounding regions; contributes to community events like allocation night and puts in a heap of extra work with the allocation process; organises half-time Auskick games at local football league matches; and, of course, the countless hours spent organising jumpers, certificates, equipment and everything in between, year after year. Wangaratta is regularly one of the biggest centres in the state, if not the nation, and this year was the biggest in Victoria. That, as you can imagine, makes it almost a full-time commitment, year-round. A huge congratulations to Ben from everyone at AFLNEB!
