AFL Nines is coming to the OKFNL this Pre Season!

This pre season Nines is coming to the OKFNL.

A great opportunity for OKFNL clubs to connect with local junior footballers and introduce them to their club ahead of the 2026 season.

Local OKFNL clubs can enter teams of 9-12 players, with prizes and giveaways for clubs who attract the most junior footballers, most registrations across teams and team spirit on the day!

When - Sunday 16th of November

Where - Wareena Park, Wangaratta

Time - 10am to 4pm

Cost - $350 per team (approx $35 per player)

Congratulations to all players selected for the 2025 NEB Vline Cup teams!

The 2025 North East Border V Line Cup teams have been selected, with Division One and Two boys teams and the girls teams preparing to compete in Ballarat.

AFL North East Border would like to thank all the coaches and support staff who have been working tirelessly over the past two months preparing the squads to compete at the carnival in Ballarat on the 23rd and 24th of September.

The NEB teams will compete against the Goulburn Murray teams on Tuesday the 23rd at Mars Stadium, before taking on the Greater Western Victoria teams on Wednesday 24th at City Oval.

National Community Auskick Volunteer of the Year!

Ben Watts announced as the AFL's National Community Auskick Volunteer of the Year for 2025!

Ben has been involved with the local Wangaratta Auskick centre for five years and the coordinator for four of those, the exciting announcement was announced at the allocation night for Auskickers graduating to the Wangaratta and District Junior Football League in front of local Auskickers, parents and local WDJFL Clubs.

The prize for the award is a grand final weekend experience including three nights' accommodation in Melbourne, a ticket to the Welcome to Melbourne function, attendance at the grand final parade, and a reserve seat ticket to the 27 September grand final.

Over his time, Ben has secured significant sponsorship for the program; has initiated the all-girls' group; provides a support network for smaller centres across Wangaratta and surrounding regions; contributes to community events like allocation night and puts in a heap of extra work with the allocation process; organises half-time Auskick games at local football league matches; and, of course, the countless hours spent organising jumpers, certificates, equipment and everything in between, year after year.

Wangaratta is regularly one of the biggest centres in the state, if not the nation, and this year was the biggest in Victoria.

That, as you can imagine, makes it almost a full-time commitment, year-round.

AFL North East Border LaTrobe University Junior Interleague Carnival 2025

The AFL North East Border (AFLNEB) LaTrobe University Junior Carnival celebrated its 18th year in 2025, continuing its proud tradition of showcasing emerging talent from across the region. The carnival provides junior footballers with a valuable opportunity to represent their league against strong opposition from neighbouring competitions.

This year saw significant changes to the carnivals structure, with the Tallangatta and District Football Netball League and Hume Football League withdrawing from the Junior Carnival this year with both leagues facing off in an Interleague Match later this season. As such in 2025, we held four full matches between the Albury Wodonga Junior Football League (AWJFL) and Wangaratta & District Junior Football League (WDJFL) across 4 age groups – U13’s, U14’s, U15’s and U16’s.

Held once again at the picturesque Lavington Sportsground, the event made full use of both ovals. With the sun shining and perfect playing conditions, the stage was set for an outstanding day of football.

Match Results & Highlights

U13s – Oval 2, 10:00 AM

A thrilling opener saw the WDJFL control much of the play early, led by Tom Sealy and Jack Hart, and holding a narrow lead into the final term. However, a resilient AWJFL side, inspired by Best on Ground Ryder Pearce (Wodonga Raiders JFC), surged late to claim victory.

Final Score: AWJFL 7.9 (51) def WDJFL 5.8 (38)

U15s – Oval 1, 10:00 AM

The AWJFL made the most of a first-quarter breeze to take an early lead, and despite a determined fightback from the WDJFL, they held on for a hard-fought win. Will Packer (Albury JFC) was instrumental and awarded Best on Ground honours.

Final Score: AWJFL 7.8 (50) def WDJFL 5.5 (35)

U14s – Oval 2, Midday

This closely contested match saw multiple lead changes in the second half. Archie Knobel and Harris Bruneau were instrumental for the WDJFL. With pressure mounting in the final minutes, the AWJFL edged ahead with a goal after the siren, sealing a memorable 8-point win. Tom Toepfer (Albury JFC) was pivotal and named Best on Ground.

Final Score: AWJFL 6.7 (43) def WDJFL 5.5 (35)

U16s – Oval 1, Midday

Featuring some of the region’s top junior talent, this match showcased high-level football. WDJFL started strongly, but AWJFL steadily worked their way back and dominated the second half. Blake Morgan (Albury JFC) delivered a standout performance to earn Best on Ground.

Final Score: AWJFL 12.14 (86) def WDJFL 7.4 (46)

Overall it was a fantastic day of football, with all but the U16’s match up for grabs until the final 5 to 10 minutes keeping everyone in attendance highly engaged.

North East Border clubs kick goals with footy funding!

A huge congratulations to ALL 7 clubs from the AFLNEB region who’ve scored funding through Round 2 of the AFL’s Telstra Footy Country Grants!

Across the first two rounds, 9 local clubs have shared over $18,000 to support their incredible initiatives and projects! This is a massive win for our community, and we’re proud to have played a small part in making it happen.

We can’t wait to keep the momentum going and support even more clubs in the remaining two rounds this year!

2024 saw the launch of the AFL North East Border Volunteer Recognition Program, proudly supported by one of our long standing partners, APCO!

The program recognised 20 volunteers across the region each week throughout the footy season and will do the same once again in 2025.

Funding Boost For Local Clubs!

Milawa FNC and Barnawartha FNC set to receive funding to upgrade lighting!

Two local football netball clubs are set to receive a funding boost to upgrade their lighting infrastructure through the Country Football Netball funding program!

The Milawa Football Netball Club who compete in the Ovens & King FNL and Barnawartha Football Netball Club competing in the Tallangatta & District Football League will both receive funding through the Country Football Netball Program which through a partnership between the Victorian Government, AFL, AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria aims to support county football and netball clubs infrastructure improvements and developments.

A total of 7 clubs across Victoria received funding in this round, and with two clubs successful in the North East it is a great outcome for football in the region and both clubs should be congratulated for the work they have put in to be successful!

AFL NEB 2025 Club Development Day!

2025 saw AFLNEB host there now annual Club Development Day which had a focus on upskilling those who are hands on during game days throughout the season!

With over 45 attendees participating in three dynamic workshops -

- Club Umpire Session,

- Coaching Masterclass Session, and

- Building Stronger Clubs Workshop -

Our Community Club Leaders and dedicated Volunteers are now equipped with the resources and skills to tackle the upcoming season!

Additionally, more than 25 Sports Trainers benefited from the Level 1 Sports Trainer Course, enhancing their expertise and readiness.

Massive thank you to La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga for hosting us at their amazing campus!

We wish all the clubs the best for the upcoming season and look forward to further supporting them with additional sessions throughout the year!

AFL NEB Region Leaders Join AFL Victoria’s 2025 Lead Your Way Program!

We are thrilled to announce that 4 leaders from our region have been successful to take part in AFL Victoria’s Lead Your Way Program this season.

Selection for Lead Your Way was highly competitive, with over 150 applications submitted by leaders from all over the state, and only 60 places offered in this year’s program.

We would like to congratulate the following successful applicants:

Tif Clare (Secretary, Centrals Junior Football Club)

Emily Naish (Secretary, Greta Football & Netball Club)

Leah Peters (Secretary, Mitta United Football Netball Club)

The Lead Your Way program offers education and development for women and gender-diverse leaders at club committee, board, or executive level. Its goal is to increase the retention of women in leadership positions by enhancing skills, confidence, and knowledge while creating a supportive network.

Participants will also benefit the broader community football landscape by bringing back valuable resources to improve the experiences of players, coaches, and volunteers at their clubs.

On March 8th, the 2025 cohort will meet for the first time alongside alumni from the inaugural 2024 program, which includes total of 8 AFL NEB Region representatives.

We look forward to hearing about your experiences in Lead Your Way, and to seeing the positive impact this program will have on you, your clubs, and the broader football community in AFL NEB Region.

The Lead Your Way Program is back for 2025

The Lead Your Way Program is back, giving women and gender-diverse people volunteering in community football leadership the opportunity to level up their skills and network.

If you're a current committee-level volunteer at a community football club in our Metropolitan Leagues or Country Regions, this program is for you!

Bronwyn McGorlick from the Wangaratta Rovers Female Football Club was a participant in 2024 and had this to say about the program - "It's been really great to connect with all the other leaders involved in footy. Sometimes you can be involved in your won club and not realise that there is this massive network of people out there, so I think that's been the best thing about it".

This course focuses on three key areas: Coach the Environment, Coach at Training, and Coach the Game.

Coaches will learn essential skill acquisition principles, session design, game planning, and strategies for coaching on game day.

AFLNEB Regional Facilities Strategy

To grow and sustain football and netball in its heartland, the AFL North East Border (AFL NEB) region
requires a coordinated approach to enhance the quality and inclusivity of its facilities by 2034.

The Regional Football and Netball Facilities Strategy aims to identify AFL NEB’s future needs through evidence-based insights and extensive stakeholder engagement.

The Strategy’s objectives will deliver more welcoming, fit for purpose and accessible environments for football and netball over the next 10 years.

AFL NEB supports all formats of football and netball – from grassroots and introductory programs, female football and flexible participation opportunities across its many facilities.

As evidenced within this report the condition of the region’s infrastructure falls significantly behind the rest of Victoria, which limits what AFL NEB

can achieve. AFL North East Border is falling below the Victorian average for facility condition and compliance. This extends to playing surfaces, sports lighting and player and umpire change rooms.

Alongside poorer facility provision, the region also faces macro challenges including a changing and aging population and volunteer stress and decline.

The Regional Football and Netball Facilities Strategy presents a framework to deliver infrastructure improvements that are both aspirational and achievable, and to help AFL and Netball Victoria reach their national and statewide goals.

Whilst the Strategy will predominantly focus on infrastructure outcomes, game development initiatives will also be highlighted to support and justify decision making and assist facility activation.

The Strategy has been developed by AFL Victoria in consultation with AFL NSW/ACT, Netball Victoria, all region Local Government Authorities (LGAs), Football and Netball Leagues, NSW and Victorian Governments and Sport North East. AFL NEB will rely on the support of these stakeholders in the delivery of the Strategy’s recommendations.

The Strategy includes club-based netball participation and facilities only. It does not include association-based netball.

Victoria Aboriginal Child Care Agency Partnership Announcement

We are pleased to announce that AFL North East Border (AFLNEB) has entered into a partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) as the preferred Family Welfare Organisation.

VACCA is Victoria’s leading Aboriginal child and family services organisation and is the largest provider of services for Aboriginal family violence and homelessness in the state. As an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO), VACCA has supported children, young people, and families in the community for more than 45 years.

Through their vision of self-determination – Live, Experience, and Be – VACCA works towards the healing of the Aboriginal community by strengthening the safety, wellbeing and culture connectedness of vulnerable children, young people, families, and community members.

Through our partnership, VACCA will have the opportunity to continue building a strong connection to the North East community by attending local football matches and events across the North East, and and supporting indigenous round events within our local leagues.

“AFL North East Border is excited to have VACCA on board as a partner in 2023. The partnership presents a great opportunity for both organisations locally with many leagues now taking steps to host indigenous rounds and supporting greater participation from the local indigenous community”, said AFL NEB Region Manager Zac Hedin.

We are pleased to announce that AFL North East Border (AFLNEB) has entered into a partnership with Rookie Me – the Official Coaching Technology Partner of the AFL.

Rookie Me joins the AFLNEB as the Official Coach and Game Day Technology Partner, which will provide a range of support and digital resources.

This partnership will bring a range of exciting new opportunities and benefits to both organisations and the coaches and players from the WDJFL, AWJFL, TDFL and NEB FFL.

Rookie Me will provide a range of support and digital resources to the leagues, including access to Rookie Me Coach Premium, an extensive library of training activities, sessions, tools and educational resources tailored for coaches at all levels of their careers.

Some clubs will also access Rookie Me Play – the new digital game day platform, to manage fair game time, player rotations and statistics for teams.

AFL North East Border Launches Female Football Academy

AFL North East Border is launching its first female football academy for the 2023 football season.

The program will cater to participants aged 12, 13 & 14 (born 2009, 2010, 2011) years old in the region, with sessions held during the school holidays throughout the year in Wodonga and Wangaratta.

Academy Manager, David Wink believes the program will help provide a link between community football and established talent pathways.

“The Fernwood Fitness Female Football League has been running since 2016 and has grown from one grade to three, and in that same time Auskick numbers have also boomed”

“The current female football talent programs have been successful. At the V/Line Cup last September, the NEB U/15s were named Team of the Tournament. We have a lot of talented footballers in our area, and this academy is the next stage in nurturing their development”

“By introducing this program to the girls aged 12-14, it will help better prepare those eligible for the V/Line Cup in in the years to come.”

AFL North East Border Female Football League are excited to announce Fernwood Fitness as the major naming rights sponsor for the next three seasons. Moving forward the league will be known as the ‘Fernwood Fitness AFL North East Border Female Football League’. Fernwood Fitness will play a key role in supporting the sustained growth of female football in our region as the league will look to add more teams to the competition in the coming seasons.

Fernwood Fitness and AFL North East Border Female Football League are similar in the fact that they both strive to provide an opportunity for females to participate in sports and physical activity to help connect with new people and improve their mental and physical well-being.

After a successful recruitment process, AFL North East Border is excited to announce the appointment of Zac Hedin as its new Region Manager effective from Monday 17th October.

Zac steps into the Regional Manager position with a strong background and understanding of football across the North East Border region having worked in various football role in the region since 2017. This includes as AFL Victoria Participation Coordinator for the North East region, Football Development Manager in Wodonga and the League Manager for Ovens and King Football Netball Club and Wangaratta District Junior Football League.

Zac’s passion for community football and comprehensive understanding of the opportunities, challenges and culture of the region makes him as a fantastic fit for the region in continuing to build and strengthen football across the region.

It is an exciting time at AFL North East Border as we focus on the renewal of the commission with the recruitment of three new directors to fill casual vacancies. We are seeking volunteer directors to assist in the governance and oversight of football and netball in the North East region.

About AFL North East Border

Established in 2013, AFL North East Border is the governing body for Australian Rules football in the Region and affiliated to AFL Victoria Country. AFL North East Border is Governed by a 9-person independent Commission which is responsible for the governing the game locally and providing local solutions for local issues.

The scope of responsibility for AFLNEB includes over 60 clubs in 7 leagues and its Regional Umpiring Department across 11 Local Government Areas including Albury City Council, City of Wodonga, City of Wangaratta, Rural City of Benalla, Alpine Shire, Towong Shire, Indigo Shire, Moira Shire, Mansfield Shire, Snowy Valley Council and Federation Shire.

Commissioners are identified for their professional skills set, previous experience in a sporting environment and understanding of regional and rural community. Operationally, the cornerstone to AFLNEB’s function is the Regional Administration Centre situated in Wodonga with a satellite office at the WSDC at the Wangaratta Showgrounds.

About You

AFL North East Border is seeking individuals to join its commission who can demonstrate knowledge, experience and technical expertise across one or more of the following areas:

• Strategic leadership

Between Round 8 and 9 of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season we will celebrate Community Umpiring Week with the aim to encourage people to get involved in umpiring Australian Football at the community level.

Throughout the week, May 6 - May 13, the AFL will be celebrating Community Umpiring Week through a number of initiatives:

• AFL Umpires will attend community Club training sessions

• Umpires at each AFL match this weekend will be led onto the ground by community umpires

• AFL Umpires will officiate in junior community matches

• Current AFL players will officiate in junior community matches

Across the country, leagues and clubs will celebrate their local umpires with various initiatives run by the clubs. Community Umpiring Development Manager, Brenton Sanderson said with more than 1.4 million people playing Australian Football, umpire numbers have never been more important.

“There are over 15,000 umpires officiating in community football matches each week and over 12% are female, a significant increase in line with the expansion of female football”, he said.

“Community Umpiring Week is designed to increase awareness of umpiring as a choice as an additional activity to playing or choosing umpiring as a sport of choice as an alternative way to participate in the game.

“Over 94% of umpires currently play or have played junior football. You can play and umpire on the same day or on alternate days. It is a great way to keep fit, earn money, develop life skills and make life-long friends.”

Level 1 Sports Trainers Course

Through AFL Victoria’s 2022 Sports Trainer Subsidy Program, AFL North East Border are hosting Sports Medicine Australia’s Level 1 Trainers Course, free of charge for all participants.

The 2022 Sports Trainer Subsidy Program is being implemented by AFL Victoria to support community clubs and their volunteers. Under this initiative, SMA will offer Level 1 Sports Trainer Accreditation and the costs for all participants will be fully subsidised by AFL Victoria.

Time: 9am start

Venue: Wodonga Raiders Function Rooms, Birallee Park, Wodonga

Duration: 8 Hours

Cost: FREE

This course includes pre-course online learning, comprising approximately 6-8 hours of self-paced learning in Level 1 Sports Trainer Theory (8 modules).

New logo for the Ovens & King FNL

The Ovens & King Football Netball League Board (OKFNL) is proud to present a new and inclusive league logo for the 2022 season and beyond.

With the league becoming a football netball league in 2005, and with many clubs quickly following suit, the OKFNL Board wanted to create a logo that incorporated all aspects of the league.

Netball Premierships have been won since 1956 with a proud history which has seen many dynasties of dominance in its time, ably led by Fay Morgan whom the A Grade league Best and Fairest Medal is named after, and celebrated 50 years in 2006.

Since then, the netball grades have added a B Reserve and an Under 15s grade to now see five grades of netball played on a Saturday and with many clubs eyeing multiple Premiership Cups each year.

OKFNL Board Chair Peter Byrne said the time was right to change the logo.

“Late in 2021, it was decided to change the league’s logo,” Byrne said.

“Everyone thought it was important to change it and to represent netball, as we are a football netball league and have been for many years.

“It isn’t just the logo for guernsey’s, dresses and shorts, this change will be reflected on our life member badges as well.”

The OKFNL Board has made the move to allow netballers to wear shorts and tops in matches in the OKFNL.

“We wanted to relax the By-Laws surrounding netball uniform requirements to make netball more comfortable for all players, and to hopefully increase participation in all grade levels,” Byrne said.

“Shorts and polo shirts will need to be in club colours and approved by the Board to ensure they are of similar standard league-wide. It will be up to each individual player with what they want to wear.

“We will be among the first sporting league’s in North East Victoria to incorporate this which is something we are proud of.”

VFL Promotion for North East Border Umpires

AFL North East Border Umpires would like to congratulate Hayden Pearson (Field) and Sean Miller (Boundary) on their promotion to the VFL Development Squad.

As part of the State League Development Squads, Hayden and Sean will be appointed to matches in the NAB League Girls, NAB League Boys and VFLW competitions throughout 2022.

Both umpires participated in the V/Line Community Umpire Talent Academy in 2020/21 experiencing skills training, off-field education, and match day coaching from VFL and AFL personnel to assist in their development.

Ovens & King FNL 2022 Fixture Released

The Ovens & King Football Netball League is excited to officially release the 2022 fixture.

Quickly moving past a disappointing end to a frustrating 2021 season the league is excited to announce what it hopes will be another tight fixture and race for the five grades of netball and two grades of football in 2022.

The 2022 season will kick off on March 26 with the earlier start factoring in two byes for each club and the Queen’s Birthday long weekend resulting in a league-wide bye for all but two clubs with Bright and Bonnie Doon facing off in the first week of the round 12 split round which will see football and netball played on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend at Pioneer Park.

Season 2022 kicks off with two blockbuster matches with the 2019 Grand Final rematch between Milawa and Greta set to continue a budding rivalry on the netball court, while Whorouly will host Bright in what is sure to be a cracking game on the football field.

Easter falls on round 4 in 2022 and this will see OKFNL clubs and spectators celebrate Easter, with clubs’ traditional Good Friday and Easter Saturday matches, with matches at popular holiday spots, King Valley, Bright and Bonnie Doon set to put O&K football and netball on full display; while Moyhu will host Greta at Easter this year with the fierce rivals looking for strong start to the season.

“Each year the fixture is a big part of the OKFNL off season, and as always there are a number of complexities to take into consideration; with the weekly bye and Easter round scheduling as well as when home games fell were consistent across the league were priorities- it is a tough act to juggle,” OKFNL League Manager Cam Green said.

“The OKFNL received over 25 individual fixture requests from clubs, all the while also considering neighbouring fixtures such as the Ovens and Murray and the Goulburn Valley and how this affects key match ups and clubs home games.

“We do try to accommodate all the club’s requests; however there are a number of factors which mean some clubs will miss out on one or two of these requests, some of these factors include ground availabilities and other conflicting club requests.”

The season will ramp up for a big finals series in late August and the leagues showpiece event, the Grand Final, is scheduled for September 10.

WDJFL 2021 Season Awards

With the season cancelled, and the last three weeks of the finals abandoned, 2021 was not the season we all thought it would be as we looked to bounce back from an equally disappointing 2020.

As we got some clear air to host the 2021 edition of the WDJFL Presentation Night, the league and the advisory panel thought it necessary to hold it as soon as we could, this being November 8.

The night started with MC Zac Guilfoyle reading out the following awards:

Minor Premiers

Under 12s: Centrals JFC Centrals were undefeated in the under 12s on the season, escaping with a draw in the dying stages of the season to keep their streak alive.

Under 14s: College JFC College were also undefeated and dominant led by Chris Doyle.

Under 17s: Junior Magpies JFC. For many of the Junior Magpies players this would have been their first finals series, but play was called off the Friday night before their game and play couldn’t get back underway under the government guidelines. A disappointing end for the Minor Premiers.

OKFNL 2021 Season Awards

Well, we finally got there. With 2021 throwing even more hurdles at us than 2020 in some regards, the Ovens and King FNL Board was pleased to see the 2021 season, while belatedly, celebrated.

The evening began with the presentation of the club champions for 2021 which went to Milawa FNC who enjoyed a very successful season, despite not getting any finals played.

The Board in 2021 decided to acknowledge the Minor Premiers for 2021 as a way to officially wrap up the season with Moyhu FNC taking home the Under 15s and C Grade Minor Premiers trophies, while Milawa FNC secured the trophies for B Reserve, B Grade and A Grade, as well as both the senior football and reserves football grade awards.

The night continued with four netball umpires which were badged during the year presented with their whistles in: Amber Finger, Kerri Michelini, Candy Weldon and Sarah Holmes-Brown.

In a change-up to years gone by, and without a Grand Final breakfast to acknowledge this season’s Life Members, the Life Members for 2021 were presented with their badges at the presentation night. Kevin Naish of Greta FNC, Les Goonan of North Wangaratta FNC, and Peter Ricardi of Bright FNC, along with currently serving OKFNL Board Members Stuart Hutchinson and Chairperson Peter Byrne.

Following these awards, it was time to move on to the individual player awards for season 2021:

It was a great year for Moyhu FNC’s junior grades, capped off with Kyia Wohlers excelling and taking home the top award, with runner up and friend Ellie Miller close by.

Flo Egan Medal winner: Tayha Wohlers, Moyhu FNC

Flo Egan Medal runner up: Charlotte Roberts, King Valley FNC

Moyhu FNC’s Tayha Wohlers replicated her sister’s feat from the lower grade to take out the win, narrowly ahead of King Valley’s Charlotte Roberts. Whorouly’s Ebony Newton was the MVP and the leading goal scorer in a promising start to her OKFNL netball career.

B Reserve: Most Valuable Player: Kate Armstrong, Bright FNC

Leading goal scorer: Kate Armstrong, Bright FNC

B Reserve Best and Fairest winner: Ellie Laffy, Milawa FNC

B Reserve Best and Fairest runner up: Jenna McIntyre, Milawa FNC

Milawa defenders Ellie Laffy and Jenna McIntyre dominated the defensive end of the court and capped off their dominance with a one-two finish in the B Reserve Medal count. Bright’s Kate Armstrong proved too strong around goals to cap off a great year in the shooting circle.

B Grade saw dual MVP’s in Jenna Brunner and Hayley Cunningham, while Benalla’s resurgence saw Sally Burgess take out the goal scoring and Jessie Ellis wrap up the Kath Dobson Medal in her first year of senior netball.

A grade saw Kyra Hunt take out her second Fay Morgan Medal, overtaking a fast starting Maddie Canning of Tarrawingee. MVP honours were again shared between Ebony Allen and Casey Brown, while Tarrawingee shooter Sarah Bond dominated in the circle for the Bulldogs in 2021.

TDFL Barton Medal & 2021 Season Awards

The Tallangatta & District Football league held their Barton Medal presentation night on Monday 15th November 2021. Traditionally, the Barton Medal awards night is held on the Monday night after the completion of round 18, typically mid-August with a crowd of over 400 hundred footballers, netballers, club volunteers, umpires, club members and guests in attendance.

With the 2021 TDFL season concluded after Round 11, and no finals series played due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions in place for community sport, it was a huge relief and with a great deal of satisfaction that the TDFL Executive were able to schedule and hold the Barton Medal. The COVID-19 restrictions relaxed enough to have a double vaccinated crowd of 120 attendees, who enjoyed dinner and the Barton Medal night vote counts and award presentations in the auditorium of the Commercial Club Albury. As is the tradition of the Barton Medal.

With a limited crowd able to attend, the TDFL Executive arranged a live stream of the entire night which was viewed online by those unable to attend in person.

AFL North East Border have announced the winners of their Coach of the Year Awards for 2021.

AFL NEB received a large amount of nominations for each category, from all leagues across the region.

AFL North East Border Football Development Manager, Zac Hedin commented, “After another difficult football & netball season in 2021, it was important to recognise the fantastic work our coaches across the region have done to keep players motivated. Purpose:

The female player to coach program aims to provide opportunity for women to easily transition from a playing capacity into a coach. It aims to utilise resources and community connections to easily educate and develop female players. Ultimately, the program will ensure that females continue to contribute and thrive within the football community.

Part 1

1. State webinar series to explain the purpose of the program and generate interest. Guest panels will deliver sessions to identified female candidates

- Webinar 2: TBC (confirmed post session 1)

- Webinar 3: TBC (January – Feb period 2022)

Part 2

1. Online CoachAFL Foundation Course (level 1 Junior, Youth or Senior course) offered to all candidates

2. Regional workshop with high profile AFLW/VFLW female coach guest speaker. Link in with other stakeholders if possible

3. Regional/League based Club Coach Director/Coordinator information session

4. Follow up with an individual club information session (if required)

Part 3

1. Connect the candidate with a junior, youth or senior local club (depending on the players coaching interest) to formulate a “buddy Coach” system to ensure the candidate is well supported and guided throughout the program

2. The “buddy Coach” implements training session and game day shadowing opportunities with the candidate.

3. AFL Victoria conducts a mid-season check in with the candidates and identifies the community clubs who haven’t been able to organise development opportunities and provides additional support where required

4. Post season, AFL Victoria continues to follow up with candidates to assist in the transition from female player to coach

Player to Coach - Recruiting Tips & Co-Coaching opportunities

Be open to flexibility - Some players may have work, family or study commitments that compete for their time. If you have a great coach who is keen to be involved but is only available for one training night a week, find a role that suits their level of time commitment.

Offer support within the role - It is important for female coaches to know they are supported. This enables confidence that they can take on the role. Show them how the club will back them and provide development.

Ask & Encourage - Be sure to approach potential coaches and promote an inclusive club culture. Engage current players to give them confidence to apply for the role.

Co-Coaching - If the player is new to coaching, offer the opportunity to pair up with an experienced coach as a mentor. Have them shadow an experienced coach at the club and allow them to see the game from a different perspective.

Resources - Providing the right resources to enable them to feel confident, asking questions of what they feel they need. It is important that the language around female coaches are inclusive, welcoming, and supports the coach.

Welcome back to Lavington Sports Ground for the Preliminary Finals. The opening week of finals saw six great games of football, with all three Lavington Panthers sides booking their place in the Grand Finals. Congratulations to all sides who competed admirably last time out. A special thank you to all clubs for organising your teams to play coming out of the recent lockdown and for following the requirements of COVID-19 restrictions that enabled us to play football safely. With the changes to the border bubble, we have some extra considerations for this week, so we thank everyone for following the guidelines; signing-in, wearing face masks, social distancing where necessary and using hand sanitiser. On behalf of AFL North East Border, a big thank you to everyone who makes it possible for the players to take the field and enjoy playing footy.

The action today kicks off with the U14 match between Wodonga Raiders and Wodonga. The two sides only met once in the home and away season, with the Raiders claiming victory in the first Wodonga derby for our competition. The Bulldogs have been enjoying their first season of footy more and more as the season goes on and have been a positive light in a year that has seen a couple of COVID-19 related interruptions. The Raiders have also enjoyed a great year, with their first win of the season against the Bulldogs beginning a run of 9 straight victories. With a Grand Final berth on the line, expect this instalment of the derby to be an exciting match.

The U17’s contest will see Murray Felines play United in what is sure to be a tight affair across four quarters. Both sides have quality players who have experience in spades and know what it will take to reach the Grand Final. The Felines took home maximum points against United this season, however the last contest was very close, the team from Rutherglen running out two-point winners. United, with players from Alpine Lions, Thurgoona and Yarrawonga, have momentum building from their late season efforts and will go all-out to reach the big dance. Another game that could go either way and will be one to watch.

Wangaratta Rovers will play in their first Preliminary Final against Wodonga Raiders, who as Minor Premiers will need to take the long way to the Grand Final after falling to Lavington last weekend. The Raiders will be motivated to bounce back strongly and show why they went through the season undefeated. The Rovers will be eager to stage an upset and extend their history making season, and earn a shot at Premiership glory against Lavington next week.

Remember to follow all requirements related to COVID-19 restrictions (face masks are mandatory at NSW events indoors and outdoors), and support your team in a positive way with respect for the game and all involved.

AFLNEB Female Football League Finals Begin

The Elimination and Qualifying Finals for the AFLNEB FFL 2021 Season commence on Sunday at Lavington Sports Ground. It has seemed a long journey to reach this point as we navigated a few hurdles throughout the year, so we are excited to be at the business end of the season.

Sunday marks the first finals matches for the U14 competition, and they are shaping to be exciting to watch. Wodonga Bulldogs are playing finals footy in their first year in the competition, aiming to progress against a hungry United outfit comprising players from Alpine Lions, Thurgoona and Yarrawonga. The other match in this age group features Lavington Panthers and Wodonga Raiders, two sides who have had a stellar year, winning almost all of their matches.

The U17 competition will be hotly contested as always. United will have their work cut out for them as they take on Wodonga Raiders in the Elimination Final. Both sides will be eager to play well today and extend their season and remain in the hunt for a Premiership. The Qualifying Final between Lavington Panthers and Murray Felines is set to be a cracker. Lavington got the best of the Felines in their first two meetings, however the most recent match between them ended in a draw. The prize on offer is a ticket straight to the Grand Final, while a Preliminary Final date awaits the other side.

Wangaratta Rovers Open Women’s side will make their finals debut as they face Murray Felines in the Elimination Final. The Rovers are excited to be playing at this time of year and will be motivated to make the most of their opportunities, but it won’t come easy against a Felines side keen to stage an upset. The Qualifying Final between Wodonga Raiders and Lavington Panthers is going to be very interesting. The Raiders have beaten Lavington on all three occasions thus far on their way to an unbeaten campaign and will aim to keep that momentum going. Lavington have certainly enjoyed a great season themselves, their only losses have been against the Raiders by a combined margin of 22 points. A possible Grand Final preview, this will be a match you will not want to miss.

Across the weekend of 16-18th of July, every AFL Victoria club will run out onto the field for the TAC & AFL Victoria Road Safety Round. But this year, it’s not just the players who will be participating. It’s the entire community. To commemorate their commitment to eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the roads, captains, coaches, players and the surrounding community will wear their support in the form of a blue armband. These bands will be available at your local football club and handed out to anyone who wants to get behind the cause. On every armband lies a QR code containing stories from an ever-growing number of Victorians on why road safety matters to them.

AFL Victoria has updated the return to play protocols as of Friday 9 July 2021.

These are in response to the latest state government restrictions for Greater Melbourne and Regional Victoria.

We have been advised there may be attendance at games from the DHHS over the next few weeks in checking on compliance, with a particular focus on QR codes and the ability to check in. The state officials will have an approach of supporting clubs and volunteers, but we want to send a reminder to all clubs, leagues and regions to ensure that all venues have QR codes and manual forms available in multiple locations for check-in and scanning.

Here we are at Round 13 of the 2021 season. With the final’s series just around the corner, we hope that everyone is enjoying their football.

Our representative match v AFL Canberra has been rescheduled for Saturday 17th July, and will now be played at Kindra Park, Coolamon. The match is pending the developing situation with regard to Government restrictions, but we are hopeful that this time the match can proceed. The match will be live streamed, so if anyone is unable to attend in person, or we are prohibited from hosting spectators, you can still tune in to the match and support the team. I wish to sincerely thank all players, coaches and clubs for their support of the representative match as we aim to make history by fielding our first senior representative team for the league.

With the current situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and outbreaks occurring recently in Victoria and NSW, now is a timely reminder to ensure we all continue to do all of the right things when it comes to being COVID-Safe. That means social distancing, washing your hands, wearing a mask where required, and checking in at venues. By doing this and more it gives us the best chance to keep community footy open for business.

The finals are approaching fast, and we are looking forward to another exciting finals series, which will see a number of firsts take place. It will be the first finals series for our U14 Competition. Wodonga Bulldogs, in their inaugural season, are pushing for a top-2 finish and will be playing finals football. Also participating in the finals series for the first time is the Wangaratta Rovers Open Women’s team. Stay tuned for announcements regarding the finals venues and get ready to support your team as they push for the Premiership.

Good luck to all clubs including all players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators for this weekend’s matches. Remember to bring the good vibes and positive energy.

Here we are at Round 12 of the 2021 season. With the final’s series just around the corner, we hope that everyone is enjoying their football.

There have been instances of poor behaviour on and off the field throughout the season. Therefore, we ask everyone to remember that antisocial behaviour is not acceptable in our footy community. Whether you are a player, coach, volunteer or spectator, everyone has a duty to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner so that everyone can feel safe and enjoy being at the footy. Please remember, this is junior sport, where the main focus is participation, development, and enjoyment. By creating a positive environment, the kids will flourish in myriad ways, and they will thank you for it in the future. So, whether you are taking the field for your match or cheering from the boundary line, lead the way and set a positive example for all to see and follow. Antisocial behaviour at the footy? Not on our turf.

AFL North East Border LaTrobe University Junior Carnival Review

On Sunday May 23rd, the annual AFL North East Border LaTrobe University Junior Carnival was held at Lavington Sports Ground, and the venue did not disappoint, both ovals were in immaculate condition and the facilities were excellent.

The four competing leagues, Albury Wodonga JFL, Wangaratta and District JFL, Tallangatta and District FL and Hume FL competed in both Under 14 and Under 16's competitions. In total, 12 teams played 18 games and provided representative opportunities for many young participants.

The U14 competition was closely contested throughout the day with a number of players producing impressive performances. The day began with an absolute bang, with Wang White and Albury Black going down to the wire and only a single point separating the teams when the final siren sounded! Next up, the Hume FL took on Albury Red, with the latter proving too strong running away with a 3-goal win. The third match of the day was another fiercely contested match with Tallangatta getting their carnival started with a 3-point win over Wang Green, inaccurate goal kicking costing the Wang side. The following two games were blowout victories for Wang White and Albury Black, while the final pool match was a classic between Tallangatta and Hume, with the latter sneaking over the line by 7 points.

The 5th v 6th playoff match was between Wang Green and Hume, with the Wang side too strong in the end, allowing them to finish off their carnival with a 21-point victory. Christian Ashworth from Wang Green and Baxter Hamilton from Hume putting in best on ground performances for their teams. Albury Red and the TDFL faced off in the 3rd vs 4th playoff, with only one goal separating the two teams at the end of the contest. Tallangatta finished the stronger of the two, led by Cody Spencer and Chad Brookes who both booted 2 goals, while Tom Ford was given best on ground honours. While for the Albury Red team, the strong efforts of Mitchell Hack and Jaxson Bolger wasn’t enough to drag them over the line.

The U14 Final was contested by the two undefeated teams in Wang White and Albury Black. The game promised to be a hotly contested match up and it did not disappoint. Wang White eventually proving to be the strongest squad of the U14’s comp, winning the final by 8 points, led by Max Bihun who was adjudged best on ground and booted a goal. The Player of the Carnival in the U14’s was awarded to Max Bihun (Wang White) from the Imperials Junior Football Club, capping off a dominant carnival where he was named best on ground for all 3 matches.

Whilst the U16’s competition didn’t serve up as many nail biters as the U14’s, the level of talent on display was undeniable. Tallangatta got off to a flyer against Hume FL with an 18 to 0 win, with some more accurate goal kicking it could have seen the margin balloon out further! Albury Red put Wang Green to the sword in the second game, Zac Whitsed slotted 3 goals as they ran out 41-point victors. Game 3 saw Albury Black dominate Wang White, kicking 4.10 to 2.0, inaccurate kicking saving Wang from a heavy defeat. Wang Green opened their account against Hume in their second match with a 40-point victory, Matt Prestianni and Charlie Ross booting 2 goals apiece. Albury Black continued their winning ways, taking down Tallangatta, Charlie McGrath having a good game with 2 goals and featuring in the best. Albury Red put in an impressive performance against Wang White with a 19 point win, Whitsed again kicking 2 goals, while Charlie Philpotts from Wang White tried hard all game.

The 5th v 6th match was a one-sided affair, with Wang White too strong for the Hume outfit. Juan-Lous Otto and Max Mahoney both booted 2 goals and Charlie Philpotts once again dominated the contest. Zac Sartore and Harry Plunkett capped off strong carnivals featuring in the best for Hume. 3rd vs 4th saw Wang Green and Tallangatta face off in a tight tussle, with the teams only separated by 2 goals in the end, Saxon Rosser leading the way for Wang Green with a goal and BOG performance.

While we didn’t have many close games earlier in the day, the U16’s final between Albury Black and Albury Red bucked the trend! This final had it all, the contest had momentum swings and regular lead changes, with spectators on the edge of their seat for the entire match, literally right up until the final kick of the game. With the final siren gone and down by 3 points, Albury Red had a set shot from 50m out, which unfortunately for the Red team fell agonisingly short handing Albury Black the win! Fraser Bennett was the dominant performer for Albury Black and Liam Williams was named best on ground for Albury Red. The U16 competition Player of the Carnival was awarded to Charlie Philpotts (Wang White) from the Junior Magpies Football Club.

Organisers were again delighted with the manner in which the Carnival was supported, the conduct of players, their team management and coaches as well as spectators. Planning for 2022 will begin shortly with leagues contributing to the annual review where suggested inclusions are submitted for consideration.

Community football fund applications closing soon

Football leagues, clubs and associations across Victoria are urged to act quickly to make the most of $1.5 million of annual support funding, with second-round applications for the AFL’s Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF) closing on June 11.

The SCIF program was recently relaunched and aims to help clubs, leagues and regions to achieve strategic objectives and provide a platform for long-term, sustained success.

The SCIF will provide grant funding of $1.5m per year for the next three years directly to local football leagues and clubs. The fund is part of the $18 million investment into Victorian community football announced by the AFL in September 2019, the largest investment in community football in the state in more than two decades.

The Toyota AFL National Volunteer Awards is a volunteer recognition program that rewards outstanding volunteers who have given notable voluntary service to Australian Football.

All leagues and clubs are invited to nominate any outstanding volunteers for one of the following categories:

• AFL Community Football Volunteer

• AFL Community Umpiring Service Award

• AFL Disability Inclusion Volunteer

• AFL Diversity Ambassador

• AFL Junior Coach

• AFL Senior Coach

• NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer

• AFL School Ambassador

The volunteer may have contributed to the completion of a major or significant project throughout the year or they may be someone who has contributed in a number of roles over a long period.

Each State and Territory will evaluate the nominations and ultimately will determine their State/Territory Volunteer of the Year in each of the above nominated award categories.

Junior Coaching Curriculum Roadshow

AFL Victoria in partnership with AFL North East Border is launching the Junior Coaching Curriculum in the North East.

The roadshow will be occurring on Monday 7th June at the Wangaratta Sports Development Centre (Wangaratta Showgrounds), Golf Links Lane, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and will be a combination of theory and practical elements. The event will take place in the Murray Bushrangers clubrooms and on the Norm Minns Oval (pending weather conditions). AFL Victoria’s Coaching Development & Education Lead, Ricky Coburn, will be in attendance to run the session along with local expert coaches.

Coaches will need to be registered and accredited through Coach.AFL in order to register for this event. All attendees will also receive 2 points toward their coaching reaccreditation requirement of 10 points for the year.

Roadshow Details

The AFL Vic Junior Coaching Curriculum Roadshow is a series of training workshops focused on The AFL Junior Coaching Curriculum (JCC). The prescribed training sessions make it simple and easy for parent and volunteer junior coaches to deliver. The program has been developed with the support of industry experts across coaching and education and has been incorporated into the Rookie Me – RM Coach platform, an activities and training sessions library, available to all coaches through their CoachAFL Membership.

The Junior Coaching Curriculum has been developed to increase player transition and retention from NAB AFL Auskick to Junior football. The key objectives are to:

• Improve the quality of coaching at Junior levels and thus subsequent experiences of the kids that play junior footy,

• Build on the NAB AFL Auskick philosophy of high energy and high touch sessions using small sided games,

• Provide national consistency in the standard and delivery of training content for Junior footy and

• Ensure every training session is Safe, Organised, Engaging and Fun.

Coaches will be supported through resources including:

• A JCC Guidebook outlining the philosophies behind the curriculum

• A video series to further educate and support coaches around the JCC and Principles of Play

AFL North East Border, in conjunction with Statewide Massage & Training, will be conducting a sports massage and taping workshop to assist club volunteers.

Presented by Garry Bilson from Statewide Massage & Training, the workshop will focus on a variety of areas, including:

• Sports massage techniques

• Trigger points/myofascial release for referred pain

• K-Taping

• Assessment and treatment of pain in/from headaches, hamstrings, lower back and lower leg

The workshop will be held on Sunday 27th June from 9:30am-3:30pm at Wangaratta Sports Development Centre, Golf Links Lane, Wangaratta.

AWJFL Season 2021 Fixture Released

The Albury Wodonga Junior Football League is excited to release the fixture for Season 2021.

The season will begin on Saturday 10th April at Lavington Sports Ground, with the clash between Lavington Panthers and Wodonga Raiders Red in the U12, U14 and U16 competitions.

The remainder of Round 1 will be played on Sunday 11th April.

The season will be played over 14 Rounds, culminating in the traditional four week finals series beginning on Sunday 1st August, with the Grand Finals on Sunday 22nd August.

There is a general bye on Sunday 23rd May when the league will compete in the North East Junior Interleague Carnival. There is also a general bye on Sunday 4th July, during the school holiday period.

FFL Season 2021 Fixture Released

The North East Border Female Football League is excited to release the fixture for Season 2021.

The season will begin on Saturday 10th April at Lavington Sports Ground, with the clash between Lavington Panthers and Wodonga Raiders in the U14, U17 and Open Women’s competitions.

The remainder of Round 1 will be played on Sunday 11th April with some intriguing matchups. Wangaratta Rovers will host the recently combined teams of Alpine Lions, Thurgoona Bulldogs and Yarrawonga Pigeons. The three clubs decided to keep their players in the game by combining for the 2021 season and will head to W.J. Findlay Oval for their first game together.

The other matchup sees Murray Felines visit Martin Park in Wodonga, to take on Wodonga Bulldogs, who join the league for the first time in their history. Wodonga will field an U14 side in 2021, leaving the U17 and Open Women’s teams from Murray Felines with the bye.

The season will be played over 14 Rounds, culminating in a three week finals series beginning on Sunday 25th July, with the Grand Finals on Sunday 8th August.

There is a general bye for the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June. There will be some football this weekend, however, as the league will compete in our first ever representative match against AFL Canberra. More details will follow on this exciting opportunity in the near future.

WDJFL Season 2021 Fixture Released

After a lengthy process of club consultation and fixturing, the Wangaratta and District Junior Football League is excited to present the under 17s, under 14s and under 12s fixture for 2021.

This season, as we rebound from an extremely difficult sporting landscape in 2020, saw one of the more trickier fixturing seasons put together.

Three separate fixtures for the three separate age groups, with three different team numbers and make ups, while ensuring as many clubs were able to play together on the same day proved difficult; the WDJFL is excited to have the players back out on the field.

With Benalla dropping to one team in the under 17s this allowed the final age group of the WDJFL to enjoy 2021 without any bye weekends.

As clubs, parents, coaches and players return to the clubs for the first time since 2019 and by welcoming in new families freshly allocated in to the under 12s, the WDJFL is looking forward to a positive 2021 season as sport and life return to our new normal.

Participation Coordinators Join AFL North East Border

As football’s official resurgence from the depths of a COVID riddled 2020 is fast approaching, AFLNEB have rebounded with the appointment of two additional staff members.

Returning Corryong local Stacey Carkeek has been appointed by AFL Victoria to the role of Participation Coordinator with the sole purpose of executing and increasing participation opportunities for youngsters. Stacey’s background has seen stints with Netball Northern Territory and AFL Northern Territory that have both involved her to increase participation, membership, and entry level experiences in the respective sports.

Additionally, AFLNEB are pleased to announce the appointment of recently retired AFL Premiership player Ben Reid. Upper Murray FNL Club Support Officer Appointed

AFL North East Border are pleased to announce the appointment of Chandan Kulkarni to the role of Upper Murray Club Support Officer for season 2021.

With the Upper Murray Region having been devastated by terrible bushfires in the Summer of 2019/2020 the recovery phase is well and truly still in progress. Season 2020 didn’t live up to the expectation of rebounding strongly into a community uplifting turnaround due to the troublesome COVID-19, however it’s with great expectation that 2021 promises to bring action aplenty.

The role of the Club Support Officer has been devised to assist the UMFNL Clubs launch into 2021 with all the assistance they require. The resource is funded via the AFL and will value add to the efforts of League Manager Nadia Edwards, both of whom will be living and working in Corryong.

“For the UMFNL to have two full-time football and netball administrators assisting in a wide range of areas, it’s a positive step towards the 2021 season”, AFLNEB Region Manager Zac Guilfoyle said.

Kulkarni will liaise with AFLNEB management in identifying and delivering specific support to the UMFNL Clubs, foster relationships with UMFNL Club volunteers to identify specific needs and areas of support, all while planning and delivering support initiatives which minimise volunteer strain at all UMFNL clubs as they recover from Bushfires.

“Chandan has experience working at the grassroots level of both Football and Cricket clubs, he has a very thorough and understanding personality toward helping those at club land”, Guilfoyle added.

Chandan will begin his duties on Monday 15th March 2021, based out of the Towong Shire Recovery Hub. With his first task to tackle the AFL Victoria COVID-19 Protocols, assisting clubs with their implementation.

Laws of Australian Football – Community League Amendments 2021

Following the announcement by the AFL regarding rule amendments for the 2021 season, please find detailed below a summary of changes, in addition to a digital copy of the Laws of Australian Football for 2021.

In summary, there are two specific changes to the Laws of Australian Football relevant to Community Leagues, being:

• Player Standing The Mark - detailed at Law 20

The defending Player will only be permitted minimal lateral movement on The Mark. If the defending player moves off The Mark in any direction prior to "Play On" being called, a 50-metre penalty will apply. The defensive team is unable to substitute the Player on The Mark.

• Location of The Mark at Kick Ins – detailed at Law 17

The Mark shall be set at 15 metres from the centre of the Kick-Off Line towards the centre of the ground at Kick Ins. This was previously set at 10 metres.

Female Football League Returns for 2021

The North East Border Female Football League (NEB FFL) and its member clubs are excited to be returning to the field in 2021.

Following a successful year in 2019, the season was cancelled for 2020 as the country navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. The year did present brief windows of opportunity for clubs to train and play practice games under State Government approved COVID-19 protocols, however the 2021 season will be the first time many players have competed in football since the 2019 season.

League Operations Manager, Matthew Elliott, said that after the challenges faced by community sport last year, it was great to see clubs preparing for the 2021 season.

“All of the clubs greatly missed playing football last year, so to see them start preseason training and welcome back their players is fantastic.

“Everyone is of course adjusting to life in the wake of the pandemic, although preparations for the season are well underway and we are looking forward to delivering a full season in 2021”.

The NEB FFL features competitions in three age groups, being U14’s, U17’s, and Open Women’s. The 2021 season will be the inaugural year for the U14 competition, with previous years consisting of an U16’s and Open Women’s format. With the introduction of the U14 competition, the league aims to provide greater opportunities for women and girls of all ages to play football in a safe and competitive environment.

In 2021, the league will feature eight clubs competing for the Premiership; Alpine Lions (based in Whorouly), Lavington Panthers, Murray Felines (based in Rutherglen), Thurgoona Bulldogs, Wangaratta Rovers, Wodonga Bulldogs, Wodonga Raiders and Yarrawonga Pigeons. The clubs boast several seasons competing in the league, however this year will mark the first time Wodonga Bulldogs have entered teams in the competition.

With clubs in the North East region commencing training as the new season approaches, Elliott encouraged any interested players to contact their local club and be involved.

“Our clubs are full of passionate and energetic people, who are committed to providing opportunities to women and girls of all ages and abilities to play football in a safe and welcoming environment.

“Whether you are an experienced player or completely new to football, each club is inclusive and coupled with their enthusiasm for growing the sport, everyone is welcome to enjoy playing football”.

Under the Player Points System (PPS), post February 1st annually when registrations and clearances open, clubs may request AFLNEB to verify the PPS values of their playing lists once approximately 75% of their anticipated playing list has been registered and the club allocates players a PPS value.

It is encouraged that clubs request verification to AFLNEB Regional Operations Officer, Gavin Rendell, to ensure verification prior to Round 1 of the respective Leagues. Once a clubs list has been verified by AFLNEB, the club’s ability to allocate PPS values shall be locked and the club notified; any additional players will then need to be verified individually by contacting AFLNEB following registration.

Within 7 days of AFLNEB verifying a club’s playing list, the club may apply for reassessment of individual players to the Player Points Panel.

Further, AFLNEB will not speculate, at any time, on any individual players PPS value and requires a player to be registered with an AFLNEB affiliated club to provide a PPS value.

Finally, clubs are reminded that they remain responsible for ensuring they do not exceed their PPS Caps. AFLNEB will continue to offer support to clubs in the management of both the Allowable Player Payments (APP) and PPS with general queries directed to AFLNEB offices in Wodonga (02 6056 1993) and Wangaratta (03 5722 1993).

Alternatively, any specific ruling requests for either the APP or PPS should be made in writing and emailed to Gavin Rendell at gavin.rendell@afl.com.au, who will now be monitoring both equalisation measures.

This is a Fixed Term Contract – Full Time, until September 30th 2021

The UMFNL Club Support Officer shall provide operational and strategic support to the Upper Murray communities and UMFNL Club volunteers following the 2020 Bushfires and is a Full Time, fixed term position until the conclusion of the 2021 UMFNL season.

Supported by the AFL Bushfire Recovery Fund, the UMFNL Club Support Officer will be responsible for ensuring volunteers of the UMFNL are adequately prepared to deliver a football and netball season in 2021 by overcoming the challenges which the Bushfires and COVID-19 have presented to the Upper Murray.

Next season’s junior footballers have taken to the field for the 2021 W&DJFL play allocation day.

The new initiative was organised by AFL North East Border, to assist the Wangaratta juniors clubs in having balanced and even teams.

Football Development Manager Zac Hedin said that normally, the process would happen at the end of the Auskick year. “This year without Auskick it’s been a bit harder to gauge where the kids are at, their standard and that sort of thing, which we’d normally get off the coaches from Auskick,” Hedin said.

“But doing it at this time of year and in a bit more depth is pretty new. “So these three sessions are designed to give us a bit of a look, get the kids back involved and kicking the footy before we send them off to their junior league clubs.”

While the new program is a great chance for the kids to get out and kick the footy around, Hedin doesn’t think it will replace the old method of player allocation.

“Normally we’d like to have these kids allocated in September/October, so they sort of know the year before they go up to junior league where they’re going to. “It’s purely been forced because of COVID-19. “It might mean that we do something a bit more in depth at the end of the Auskick year each year if this goes well.”

As for the scope of the sessions, Hedin said they are accessible to all who want to play junior club football, regardless of experience. “It’s just pretty basic drills today, just to get a gauge on where the kids are at. “Obviously, they haven’t touched a footy or had a proper kick of the footy in a little while, so we want to get them back used to bouncing the ball, kicking the ball, handballing the ball, marking the ball. “Then over the next couple of sessions we might play a few little games, get a bit more game sense, see how the kids go finding the footy and picking the ball up in a pressure situation as well.”

Naturally, the program is compliant with COVIDSafe policies. “We’ve got the QR code there, sanitiser, we get all the parents to register, that sort of thing. “They’ve all brought down their own drink bottles, their own sunscreen, that sort of stuff. “So we are trying to do the best we can with what we’ve been given.”

Hedin is assisted by a group of volunteer coaches from both the Magpies and Rovers football clubs, whose expertise and knowledge will be passed onto the future football stars. “It’s good to get them involved because obviously hopefully that’s where a lot of these kids will end up.”

The Dunn’s Twin City Cranes Tallangatta & District Football League (TDFL) are pleased to release the 2021 season fixture. As is usually the case, compiling the TDFL Draw has its challenges around the allocation of games for Wodonga Saints who share the Martin Park Venue with the Wodonga Bulldogs. The Wahgunyah FNC, who also share their recreation reserve with the Wahgunyah Speedway, have two weekends that they cannot be scheduled at home in season 2021.

This year’s focus in compiling the fixture has been to provide as many club requests as possible and in doing so ignoring the usual focus of evening out the draw with the top 6 playing each other twice, etc.

The Wodonga Saints will this year play one scheduled home game at Sandy Creek, being Round 2 V Wahgunyah due to Martin Park being unavailable for this scheduled home game. Rounds 14 and 15 have also been swapped to allow Wodonga Saints home and away games to work so the order of opponents will change from the first seven rounds for Rounds 14 & 15.

Fixture Highlights

• The season will commence with Round 1 on March 27th, 2021.

• Round 1 will see 2019 Senior Premiers Thurgoona unveil the 2019 Premiership flag at home when they take on Kiewa SC.

• Yackandandah will unveil their 2019 Reserves Premiership flag V Dederang MB and Tallangatta will unveil both the 2019 Under 17’s and Under 14’s Premiership flags at home V Mitta United.

• Chiltern host Barnawartha and Wahgunyah host Rutherglen, both games that will hold plenty of interest for old rivals.

• Beechworth host Wodonga Saints at Beechworth and this game will be moved to the 22nd of May Bye round if Beechworth make the Wangaratta Cricket Association Grand Final played on this day.

• A Bye round has been scheduled for the Easter weekend after Round 1.

• Round 2 sees Kiewa Sandy Creek host a night game versus Tallangatta FNC under lights at Kiewa SC’s home ground at Tangambalanga.

• Wodonga Saints will host Wahgunyah at Sandy Creek due to Martin Park being unavailable.

• ANZAC Day falls on the Sunday this year and Round 4 will be played on Saturday April 24th with Rutherglen hosting Kiewa SC for the traditional ANZAC shield game.

• Two General Bye’s are also scheduled for the traditional Interleague round on 22nd May to allow our Juniors to play in the Wangaratta Junior Carnival and the 3rd July 2021 in the Victorian School holidays.

• Kiewa Sandy Creek will play a second twilight/night game in Round 9 when hosting old rival Mitta United.

The Tallangatta & District Football League Clubs should be mostly satisfied with the draw outcome as the majority of club requests have been able to be satisfied in compiling the TDFL 2021 Fixture.

Ovens & King FNL 2021 Fixture Release

The Ovens & King Football Netball League is excited to officially release the 2021 fixture, which offers plenty of exciting matches and plenty of value for each club involved.

Putting 2020 behind us, the league is excited to announce what it hopes will be a tight fixture and race for the five grades of netball and two grades of football in 2021.

The 2021 season will launch on March 27 with the earlier start factoring in two byes for each club following Glenrowan’s departure from the fixture for 2020, and the Queen’s Birthday long weekend resulting in a league-wide bye.

Season 2021 kicks off with two blockbuster matches with the 2019 grand final rematch between Milawa and Bright set to continue a budding rivalry, while Tarrawingee and King Valley will lock horns.

Easter is early in 2021 and this will see OKFNL clubs and spectators celebrate Easter, with clubs’ traditional Good Friday and Easter Saturday matches, with matches again at popular holiday spots, King Valley, Bright and Bonnie Doon again set to put O&K football and netball on full display.

ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday in 2021 and this will see age-old rivals Tarrawingee and Milawa clash at Tarrawingee in what will be a hotly contested match.

“Each year the fixture is a big part of the OKFNL off season, and as always there are a number of complexities to take into consideration; the weekly bye and Easter round scheduling as well as when home games fell were consistent across the league,” OKFNL League Manager Cam Green said.

“The OKFNL received over 20 individual fixture requests from clubs, whilst also considering neighbouring fixtures such as the Ovens and Murray and the Goulburn Valley.

“Whilst we do try to accommodate all the club’s requests, there are a number of factors which mean some clubs will miss out on one or two priorities, some of these factors include ground availabilities and other conflicting club requests.”

The fixture will be vastly different to previous years without an interleague bye and a bye every week for at least one club. The season will run over 21 weeks, with 22 team byes scheduled, however, Bright and Bonnie Doon will play in the second week of the round 11 split round which will see football and netball played on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The will season ramp up for a big finals series in late August and the leagues showpiece event, the Grand Final, is scheduled for September 11.

The AFL North East Border Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be conducted on Wednesday 17th February, 2021, from 7:30pm at The Commercial Club Albury, Dean St Albury.

Nominations for Commissioners must be received by the Region General Manager at least 28 days prior to the AGM, being no later than 12 noon Wednesday 20th January, 2021.

Nominations for Elected Commissioners must be:

a) In writing on the prescribed form provided for that purpose (Refer to Nomination Form); and

b) Certified by the nominee expressing her or his willingness to accept the position for which she or he is nominated. (Refer to Consent Form)

If nominating a candidate, you are requested to provide details of the candidate’s qualifications and experiences along with any other information that will assist members in deciding who should be elected as an AFL NEB Commissioner. The information provided will be circulated to all members in accordance with Article 12.1 (c), 14 days prior to the AGM.

Notices of Motion for the AGM must be submitted in writing to the Region General Manager at least 28 days prior to the AGM, being no later than 12 noon Wednesday 20th January, 2021.

The Agenda, Commissioner Nominations and Notices of Motion will be circulated to members 14 days prior to the scheduled AGM date.

On behalf of the AFL North East Border Commission, we wish everyone a happy new year and look forward to a more prosperous 2021 after the cancellation of football and netball in 2020.

It is important that as individuals and communities we continue to adhere to COVID safe practices to best ensure an environment in which both football and netball can return in 2021. As an organisation, we remain positive and excited about the season and despite the challenges the pandemic has presented, AFLNEB is well positioned to support the game into the future.

Whilst the season didn’t proceed in 2020, it has provided an opportunity to examine the organisations structure and its strategic focus as we look to reboot following the severe impacts of COVID with an emphasis on consolidation, participation and retention.

AFLNEB staff will be returning to work on a full-time basis and pleasingly, we have retained all of our team which is of huge benefit as the individual and collective experiences will be invaluable. Whilst staff are returning, access to both the Wodonga and Wangaratta offices will be limited and any face to face contact required with any staff member should be by arrangement.

Pending a recruitment process, Zac Guilfoyle has been seconded into the role of Region Manager commencing Tuesday January 12th, 2021. Zac has worked in community football in the North East Border Region for 12 years and has well developed relationships and has extensive experience including League Management and most recently as Lead Football Development Manager (FDM) for the Region.

2021 Player Allocations for W&DJFL Clubs

Each year, graduating Auskickers and new junior players in the Wangaratta region are allocated to a local Wangaratta & District Junior Football League Club (WDJFL). To help assist this process for 2021, AFL North East Border and the WDJFL will be running three training sessions in January at the WJ Findlay Oval in Wangaratta. These sessions will be used to assist us with allocating the players to the correct club and to assist with a smooth transition into the WDJFL.

Location: WJ Findlay Oval

Dates: January 15th, 18th and 20th

Time: 9am – 9:45am (please arrive 15mins before start time)

Players must be born prior to the 31/12/2010

It is strongly recommended that players attend at least two of the sessions, however if this is not possible please contact zac.hedin@afl.com.au to discuss.

In an effort to adhere to all COVID-19 protocols, participants and spectators must -

- bring their own water bottle

- stay home if unwell

- follow the relevant outdoor gathering limits

- maintain social distancing (1.5m apart)

- practice safe hygiene

AFLNEB Office Closure Dates for Christmas

The AFLNEB offices in Wangaratta and Wodonga will be closed for the Christmas holiday period from Wednesday 23rd December 2020.

AFLNEB staff will return to work from Tuesday 12th January 2021.

The AFLNEB Commission and Management wishes everyone in the football community a very safe and Merry Christmas. We hope you are able to enjoy spending some time with family and friends, and we look forward to seeing you on the field in 2021.

TDFL AGM and Executive Committee

The TDFL held its AGM on Sunday 29th November at the Wodonga Bowls Club. The AGM was well attended, with 25 attendees from the club Delegates and League Executive in attendance. The 2021 football season will see a couple of new faces in the TDFL Executive committee.

We also have the pleasure of welcoming Errol Gibb and John Sheehan onto the Executive Committee for the 2021 season.

Lifeline Albury Wodonga Accidental Counsellor Session

The AWJFL, in conjunction with Lifeline Albury Wodonga, supported by RACV, are hosting a session of Lifeline's "Accidental Counsellor" program on Thursday 10th December at Birallee Tavern, Wodonga.

Accidental Counsellor is aimed at those who would like to be able to safely and effectively support friends, family, colleagues, and strangers who are in distress or experiencing a crisis. The learning can be applied in many contexts, and will provide participants with skills in active listening, calming and effective gentle questioning.

The course is open to anyone involved with an AWJFL club and no pre-existing skills or knowledge are required.

What: Lifeline’s Accidental Counsellor Session

The COVID Safe Plan template for all AFL Victoria clubs has been released. This is mandatory to reopen in line with the current public health directions.

Strategic Planning and Club Development Program - RCoW and AFLNEB

AFL North East Border, in conjunction with the Ovens and King Football Netball League and Wangaratta and District Junior Football League, has been successful in obtaining funding to deliver a Strategic Planning and Club Development Program under the Rural City of Wangaratta’s Business and Community Recovery Grants Program.

The North East region’s football and netball clubs and associated communities have been greatly impacted by the January 2020 bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic which, due to the restrictions, resulted in the loss of the 2020 football netball season in all AFLNEB affiliated leagues.

Clubs across the region have identified the need to focus on rebuilding clubs and reconnecting with communities with a return to football and netball competition in 2021.

It is also identified that clubs need to adapt to the continuing COVID-19 restrictions.

The Strategic Planning and Club Development Program will provide one-on-one support for up to 10 clubs across of the Wangaratta region, including senior and junior clubs to help prepare new club strategic plans.

AFLNEB League Manager Cam Potter said the successful application for the grant will benefit 10 clubs across the Rural City as clubs attempt to find their way back from a devastating 2020 season.

“The impact of the bushfires and COVID-19 to football governance and operations has been significant at all levels in 2020,” Potter said.

“With no football or netball in 2020 a key focus of all leagues and clubs is to support community participation and connection with the expected return of football and netball competition in 2021.

“The Strategic Planning and Club Development Program will support clubs in reviewing their current positions and establish new and updated strategies addressing the impacts from 2020.

“It will also help clubs establish operational approaches as COVID safe organisations supporting the safety of their participants and the local community.”

Expression of interests are now being requested from football-netball clubs across the City of Wangaratta municipality which are open until December 11th, 2020 with expressions of interested to be forwarded to cam.potter@afl.com.au .
